Professor Marek Chmielewski is a specialist in organic chemistry. His scientific interests are focused on synthesis and stereochemistry of organic compounds. In detail, his research area involves stereocontrolled addition and cycloaddition reactions, synthesis and transformations of carbohydrates, development of new methods for synthesis of penicillins, cephalosporines and derivatives, solid-phase organic synthesis.
Marek Chemielewski studied chemistry at Faculty of Chemistry of Warsaw Technical University and he worked there as an assistant till 1968. In 1969 he joined Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS. In 1972 he completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Aleksander Zamojski on total synthesis of racemic pentoses from 2-metoxy-5-6-dihydropyran. In 1981 he completed his habilitation and since 1991 he is Full Professor.
Prof. Marek Chmielewski spent two long term research stays, at Purdue University with R. L. Whistler (1973/74) and at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with J. N. BeMiller (1979/81). He was also visiting professor at Purdue Univerity (USA, 1988 and 1990), University of Seville (Spain, 1992), University of Orlean (France 2004). Scholars: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (1999), Royal Society of Chemistry Journals Grant (UK, 2002), Academia dei Lincei Visitors Grant (Włochy, 2005). He gave lectures at universities at USA, Canada, Europe and Asia.
Prof. Chmielewski is an author or a co-author of numerous monographic and review articles, over 199 original papers, five patents. He is also an author of papers dealing with education and science. He is member of editorial boards of JSC Chemical Communication, Journal of Carbohydrate Chemistry, Carbohydrate Research, Indian Journal of Chemistry, ARKIVOC and Carbohydrate Letters. Prof. Chmielewski is promoter of 19 Ph.D. thesis.
Prof. Chmielewski received numerous awards and distinctions including: Award of Department III of Polish Academy of Sciences (1984), Kostanecki’s Medal (Polish Chemical Society, 1994), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Award (Polish Academy of Sciences, 1998), Knight’s Cross Order of Polonia Restituta (2002), National Education Commission Medal (2004), French Chemical Society Award (2009).
Since 1987 till 2004 he was Research Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS and Director between 2004-2010. He was Vice-President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, elected for the term 2011-2014.
Prof. Chmielewski is a member of Polish Chemical Society, American Chemical Society, Warsaw Society of Science. In 2006-2008 he was coordinator at European project European Research Area – Chemistry. He is representative of Poland in European Carbohydrate Organization, member of scientific committee of European Symposiums on Organic Chemistry.
